DJ Petrobras:Upbeat On Gazprom Talks, But No Deals In Offing (Dow Jones
News Service)
Updated: Friday, July 14, 2006 11:15AM ET
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR), or Petrobras, Chief
Executive Jose Sergio Gabrielli said Friday he was upbeat about recent
talks with Russian gas giant OAO Gazprom (GSPBEX.RS) on possible future
cooperation on projects but said there was nothing concrete in the
offing.
Senior executives from Brazil's state-run oil company and Gazprom met
recently to discuss possible input in a giant pipeline project from
Venezuela via Brazil to Argentina because Gazprom has years of
experience
building such long links in harsh Russian conditions.
In December, Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela began studies on the
construction of a 9,000-kilometer pipeline linking the three countries
that could cost between $17 billion and $23 billion, according to
preliminary estimates.
"We're in the very very early stages of conversations with Gazprom,"
Gabrielli told investors in London. "We think we could combine our
experience with deep water with the experience that Gazprom has with
long gas pipelines.
But, he added: "It's too early to say we are going to do something
together but there are some possibilities."
